clock which proudly displayed 10:20am. Groaning at the lateness she threw the bed covers back and got up, throwing some hastily grabbed clothes on. She stumbled as a momentary weakness over took her. I must still be tired she thought, swiftly followed by there’s something going on here, something big. Not even bothering to grab something to drink Claire almost ran out of the flat into the bright mid morning sun.
Wandering through the small town Claire needed to ask directions before she found the library. After a discussion at the reception desk which involved her filling in a form to become a member she soon found herself on the microfiche machine with a box containing all the newspapers going back one hundred years. Hours passed by as Claire went through them, fascinated at the sort of news her new home brought up. The area was well known for sightings of the strange it seemed. A floating apparition was a common occurrence it seemed as was reports of ghostly black dogs. The whole town was seemingly festooned with reports of the paranormal.
Then she came across the report that made her shiver. Human remains had been found, along with the rusted remnants of muskets and a few pieces of jewellery. A local
archaeologist theorised that the field was once the sight of a battle between two barons, a land dispute turned nasty. A gold ring in particular had piqued their interest and the report featured a photograph of it. Looking at it Claire’s blood ran cold for although it was covered in dirt and grime it was unmistakably the same solid gold band with a tiny shining emerald that she had found yesterday.
She pushed herself away from the microfiche machine. This can’t be possible she thought, it cannot be the same ring. Returning to the reception she thanked the lady behind the desk and turned to walk out before turning back. “Do you have the parish records here?” The receptionist nodded, “We have them on computer now, as it is part of a project to digitise the whole town’s records”. Some pleading later and Claire was sat in front of the computer screen. Straining her brain she tried to remember the name of the person on the bottom of the letter she had found and then before it left her brain again she typed the name in.
Peter Carterson. The name brought up only two records. Born in the village of Little Wickham 1796, died 1818 in battle. Just twenty two years old Claire mused to herself and then thought back to her dream. The man in her dream could certainly have been that old. She sat there for a moment and then typed her own name in. Record after record came up. Dammit what am I missing she thought and then wracked her brain for an idea. Remembering the letter she refined her search and typed in merchant. Fewer records appeared mostly sales ledgers and donations to the local church but one stood out.
